Rhetorical memes

There is a time and place for everything. Sometimes something is somewhere specifically because it is not the time and place for it. Using kairos in rhetoric is being able to put something, whether it be art, a video, writing piece, anything, out into the world at a specific time and place so that you can bring across a specific message.

I am here to analyze the kairos of the graffiti of this here bathroom sign:

This bathroom sign is in a college dorm hallway. There may not be a deep, philosophical, or political meaning behind this, but I believe it is still worth exploring. Who knows what we will come up with.

In my personal opinion, memes are essential to the life a male college student. They are great to provide comic relief when you are under stress or are just looking to pass the time. With the prevalence that memes have in pop culture in this day and age, it seems that a college freshman has taken an opportunity to spread some cheer through this sign.

When people think of the word “meme,” they think of funny pictures, videos, etc. They help release stress and make you laugh. Someone transformed the word “men” into “meme” to create an opportunity for others to laugh and release some of their stress. Men use this bathroom constantly, as it has showers and is shared by several men throughout this college dorm hall. In other words, there is a lot of traffic associated with this sign. This allows for the most people possible to see it, think of memes, and give a little giggle.

It isn’t much, but it is there to brighten up your day and lift you up when the stress of college may be weighing you down. I don’t know, I think it’s pretty funny!
